Cupcakes are little cakes which are often baked in paper cases. Known as patty cakes in Australia and fairy cakes in the UK, cupcakes can be served plain, frosted, or decorated with sprinkles and other ingredients. Regardless of your baking experience, you are sure to find a cupcake recipe that you love.
These delicious little treats date back to 1796, or at least that is when the first cupcake recipe goes back to. In the early 1800s, both "cupcake" (one word) and "cup cake" (two words) were used. They used to be baked in individual molds, cups or ramekins made of pottery and their name comes from these little containers, or "cups" which contained them.
This name is still used today and the word cupcake refers to any small, single portion-sized cake. A few years ago, cupcakes enjoyed a new wave of fame, largely thanks to various television shows. Also, Martha Stewart published a cupcake cook book last year which further roused interest in this type of baking.
You can use almost any layer cake recipe to make cupcakes and the basic ingredients in most cupcake recipes are butter, eggs, flour, and sugar. Cupcakes bake much quicker than layer cakes because they are smaller and therefore conduct heat better.
Although some bakers still like to use individual ramekins for making their cupcake recipes, steel cupcake trays are more popular today. These pans are a bit like muffin tins and some are nonstick. They usually have six or twelve "cups" in which the cupcake batter goes. As well as steel ones, you can also get silicone or stoneware ones. The cups will be three inches in diameter and hold four ounces of batter unless you get a jumbo or miniature specialty pan.
These recipes are relatively recent, when you look at the whole history of cupcakes. These big filled cupcake recipes might contain a cappuccino or tiramisu flavor filling. Gourmet cupcake stores like Crumbs Bake Shop offer various types of cupcakes and you can recreate similar ones yourself at home.
The best cupcake recipe is largely a matter of personal preference. Some people like simple cupcakes with or without a plain vanilla frosting. Others like jumbo filled cupcake recipes with chocolate, caramel, coffee, or fruit fillings and kids tend to like all cupcake recipes.
You can get really creative when it comes to gourmet cupcake recipes, choosing the flavor of the cake itself, the flavor and type of frosting and the decorations you want to use. Flavor examples for the cake include vanilla, orange, lemon, banana, coconut, almond, coffee, rose, and chocolate. Flavor examples for the frosting include vanilla, lemon, orange, chocolate, peach, coconut, mixed fruit, berries, marshmallow, chocolate ganache, rose, peppermint and more.
You can combine any flavor of cake with any flavor of frosting when making your own cupcake recipes. You might also want to fill them and decorate them with sprinkles or anything else you can think of. Cupcakes are suitable for all kinds of occasions and some people even like to serve them at their wedding, rather than having a traditional wedding cake. You can get special cupcake holders for these.
Whatever is going on, there is no doubt that homemade cupcakes recipes will make the occasion even better.

Cupcakes might not be the healthiest food in the world but they are very small so that should not be an issue. Besides, life is too short not to enjoy the occasional cupcake! Why not add some extra nutrition to your next cupcake recipe anyway, in the form of carrots? Carrot cake is one of the best-loved cakes ever and carrot cupcakes are equally delicious. The following recipe blends carrots with chocolate, brown sugar, walnuts, buttermilk and more, for a truly mouthwatering gourmet cupcake recipe.
If you do not have a food processor, you will need to use a cheese grater to grate the carrots by hand. This can be time-consuming and watch your knuckles if you are using an old-fashioned kind of grater!
This recipe is very simple and the carrots, brown sugar (use light or dark brown sugar here) and walnuts add a wholesome flavor. You could swap the brown sugar for white sugar if you want to use it. Choose low-fat buttermilk if you want to reduce the fat count a little. These cupcakes have a wonderful flavor and they are light and airy, as all cupcake recipes should be.
1 lb peeled, sliced carrots
6 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 ¾ cups brown sugar
⅓ cup buttermilk
1 oz finely chopped semisweet chocolate
½ teaspoon salt
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
24 walnut halves
For the Frosting:
3 cups powdered sugar
¾ cup butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Process the carrots in a food processor until they are very finely minced.
Combine them with the eggs, buttermilk, oil, and brown sugar in a bowl.
Spoon the flour into a dry measuring cup and level it off with a knife.
Stir the flour, salt, and baking soda together with a whisk.
Add the flour mixture to the carrot mixture, stirring until smooth. Stir in the chocolate.
Divide the batter between 24 paper case-lined muffin cups.
Bake the chocolate carrot cupcakes for 22 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a cupcake comes out clean.
Let the cupcakes cook in the pan for 10 minutes, then take them out of the pan and let them finish cooling on a wire rack.
Beat the frosting ingredients together until the mixture is smooth.
Pipe the frosting over the cooled cupcakes and decorate each one with a walnut half.
(Makes 2 Dozen)
You can see from the picture how decorative the buttercream frosting looks when it is piped on to the cupcakes like this. If you do not have a frosting kit, you can snip the corner off a little plastic bag and use that. Alternatively just spoon the frosting the cake and use a teaspoon or blunt knife to spoon it over. The walnut halves finish these little treats off perfectly and complement the wholesome carrot flavor. If you are looking for unusual cupcake recipes or gourmet cupcake recipes, you might wish to consider this recipe for carrot cupcakes. The recipe is simple to follow and the results will delight you.
Cupcake recipes are a great thing for any home cook to master, because these little treats are easy to prepare, there are lots of ways to make them extra-special or personalized, and they taste great. How can anyone resist these wonderful little cakes, which are light enough to be a great snack yet satisfying enough to be smiling and happy after just one?
Everyone from kids right up to grandparents loves these light treats, and most people have a clear favorite, whether that is a classic vanilla cupcake with buttercream frosting, chocolate cupcakes, ones with nuts or dried fruit, or something else.
One reason why cupcakes are so popular is that they are so easy to make. Sometimes kids make them at school as one of their first cookery projects. Making the cupcakes is very straightforward and decorating them is fun. Even if you want to change the flavor of the cupcakes, it is often simply a case of adding one or two other ingredients to the basic cupcake recipe, instead of changing the whole thing.
The same applies to the frosting and you can use food coloring or flavored extracts to change both the look and the flavor of your frosting. You can also experiment with different types of frosting - glossy ones, fluffy ones, healthy ones, cream cheese ones, and more. Cupcakes also come in different sizes. They are usually quite small anyway, designed to serve one person, but you can get mini ones, large ones, and extra-large ones too.
Cupcakes are sure to light anyone's eyes up, so serve them as a special treat after a long day at school or work, with a glass of milk or soda for the kids or a hot drink for the grownups. You can serve them as a snack in the late morning, late afternoon, or evening, to turn any frown upside down guaranteed.
Since cupcakes are so small, they are not going to spoil anyone's appetite for lunch or dinner. Cupcakes are usually served alone but you could serve them with whipped cream or ice cream if you want to make this small snack into a complete dessert.
You could even serve your cupcakes still warm from the oven, with some syrup drizzled over them instead of a frosting. There are many cupcake variations and lots of ways to serve them too. Use your imagination to personalize any cupcake recipe and make it your own.
Cupcake recipes are suitable for any occasion. Maybe you want to make something cute and tasty to delight the kids, in which case you can make a really easy cupcake recipe and frost it, then maybe add some sprinkles or something to give them a splash of color.
If you want something more elegant, perhaps for a party, then there are also plenty of extra-special cupcake recipes to choose from, featuring ingredients like citrus, nuts, vanilla, fruit liqueur, or fresh fruit. There are cupcake recipes for every palate, and you can even combine your favorite cupcake with your favorite frosting to make a truly heavenly treat.
If you have never tasted or made homemade cupcake recipes, you are in for a pleasant surprise when you find out how easy they are and how delicious they taste. Your kitchen will smell amazing while they are baking and the finished cupcakes will have a light, airy freshness which is lacking from store-bought cupcakes.

We all know cupcakes are tasty but what is the history of cupcakes, and how did these little snacks come about? The first cupcake recipe dates back to 1796 although they were also known as "cup cakes" (two words) back then as well as "cupcakes." There are two theories behind the name. In these bygone days, the cupcakes were cooked in individual ramekins, molds or cups made from pottery. The word "cup" is believed to have been used because the small containers they were baked in were like cups. A cupcake is a small cake which is eaten in one portion, unlike regular cakes which can be any shape but are usually cut into squares or slices because they are too large for one serving.
Another theory behind the name is that a cupful of sugar, a cupful of butter, a cupful or sugar and cupfuls of other ingredients were used to make cupcakes, and this is similar to how pound cake got its name. The old recipes for pound cakes and cupcakes actually feature very similar ingredients. Both of these theories have been proven correct, and it seems likely that the word cupcake comes from a combination of these two ideas. "Cupcake" is an American word because cupcakes are called fairy cakes in the UK (where the ingredients are weighed in grams instead of cups).
Today we have cupcake stores and cupcake cookbooks, to help home cooks, and people still love to make and eat this type of cake. One of the reasons why cupcakes will never stop being popular is that there are so many types you can make. Just as there are hundreds of types of regular cakes or hundreds of types of cookies, there are plenty of cupcake recipes you can experiment with too. All you need to make your own cupcakes are the ingredients, a mixing bowl and spoon, paper cupcake liners, and a muffin tray.
Find Out More About the History of Cupcakes in our more in depth look at its history.
At first glance, this looks like a typical cupcake recipe. You have the sponge-like cupcake base, topped with a creamy frosting and then - wait, is that a piece of crispy bacon? Bacon might sound like the last thing you would use to decorate your cupcakes but, if you think about it, why not? The salty, meaty flavor of bacon goes beautifully with a creamy frosting, especially if cream cheese is a major ingredient, and contrasting flavors work well. Also, bacon is super-crispy, and that makes a lovely contrast with the soft, fluffy cheesecake. Try topping your homemade cupcakes with bacon. The result might just surprise you.
There are lots of snacks you can offer to visitors, but few things beat the charm of cupcakes. Even a slice of homemade cake cannot compete with cupcakes because a slice of cake is not as cute as a cupcake, and the individual portions also mean you will not have to listen to cries of "just a little slice for me!" and having no idea how much to cut for that particular guest.
A cupcake is a small, light treat, which you can make in many flavors. You can serve each person one with their drink, or you can arrange all the cupcakes on a platter and let people help themselves. The second option is not advisable if you are feeding kids who have a real lack of willpower when it comes to cakes!
If you enjoy putting your own stamp on the recipes you make, making cupcakes should be a very attractive prospect to you, because you get to choose the flavor of the cupcakes, the flavor of the frosting, any additions you want to use, and the decoration. You can make any kind of cupcakes you like, and experiment with colors, textures, and flavors.
You might end up with a special signature cupcake recipe which you can make for your friends and family when they deserve something special. The sky is the limit with cupcake recipes and nothing else is the same as this wonderful little snack.
However cupcakes first came about, these amazing little snacks we know as cupcakes are dear to everyone's heart, no matter whether you are young or just young at heart. Cupcake recipes are perfect for letting you recreate your fondest childhood memories. Alternatively why not create brand new memories using grownup cupcake recipes?
Cupcakes have different names in different countries. For example, they are known as fairy cakes in the UK and patty cakes in Australia. Cupcakes are a global phenomenon, from Jordan to Japan, and India to Italy. Every country has desserts and cakes in its repertoire and if you can loosely define cupcakes as small cake treats then every country has something to offer.
The main ingredients in cupcakes, which are flour, sugar and butter, do not vary much, but you can alter the cupcake flavor and aroma, and change the frosting to give your cupcakes an international flavor. Although cupcakes are usually vanilla flavored and topped with white frosting, you can read through our international cupcake ideas to find out how to give an exotic flavor to your homemade cupcake recipes.
You can make an Irish cupcake by adding a splash of Guinness to the cake batter, or French ones by adding Champagne. You can even draw little black Eiffel Towers on white chocolate disks with a sugar pen. Find sugar pens at any online baking store.
Japan is one of the wackiest countries when it comes to food, so you might want to make cupcakes which look like sushi designs. Make your cupcakes like miniature jelly rolls for an unusual twist. They do not need to taste like sushi but shaping them into little rolls can look cute, and you can decorate them with colorful decorations too, for that Japanese feel.
If you want to make something quintessentially English, you can add polka dots and red roses to your cupcakes, or even make Union Jack flag topped ones. Add a little Chinese jasmine tea to your buttercream for an oriental touch.
Some sangria and a pinch of cinnamon will give your cupcakes a Spanish twist, and you can make the cupcakes orange-flavored too. Just close your eyes and enjoy the Seville sunshine in every bite. For a south of the border delight, make caramel dulce de leche-filled cupcakes, and top them with whipped cream frosting and cinnamon sugar. If you want to make Mexican chocolate cupcakes, do not forget to add some chili powder to the mix. Chocolate and chili go together better than you might imagine.
The most famous dessert vegetable in the Philippines is the purple yam, which turns everything purple. Make Manila cupcakes with purple yam and add some seasonal fruits for an amazing flavor sensation. Some grocery stores sell purple yams. If yours does not, you can use some sweet potato and a bit of purple food coloring instead.
Add saffron to your cupcake batter for an aromatic Indian taste, and make the frosting with cardamom and rosewater. These heavenly morsels are light and perfect after a rich Indian dinner. Make German cupcakes with chocolate, cherries, and coconut. These are luxurious and rich, but if you want to intensify the flavor even more, make a dark chocolate frosting too. Blend sugar, egg white, butter, and vanilla to make a Swiss meringue buttercream frosting, or add a splash of maple syrup for a Canadian-inspired topping.
Even if you are not a dessert-lover, you can find the perfect cupcake recipe for you. If you do not like very sweet foods, then making your own cupcakes is ideal. You do not have to eat the over-sweet ones from the store; instead you can make your own and determine how much (or how little) sugar goes into them. Some people like to use fruit or honey for the sweetness, rather than sugar, and making your own means you can decide this.
Perhaps you want to make cupcakes for a special occasion, theming them blue for a boys' party, pink for a girls' party, white or cream with silver and pink or red sprinkles for a hen party or baby shower, or even making them chocolate-rich when you crave nothing less than pure indulgence.
Some people enjoy really rich, gooey cupcakes, with plenty of chocolate, marshmallows, caramel, fudge, and other rich flavors. Others prefer simple vanilla cupcakes with a basic frosting. There are literally hundreds of different cupcake recipes so you can find your perfect match.
Another option is to divide the cupcake batter in half and add more sugar to one half, plus perhaps some food coloring, and leave the other half as it is, for two totally different sets of cupcakes. You can make two different frostings too.
Being creative at home means you can use your imagination to make the most amazing cupcakes, and certainly more creative ones than you can find in the store. There are homemade cupcake recipes for everyone, no matter which flavors you prefer or what kind of frosting or decorations you like best. If you make your own cupcakes you can make them exactly as you like.
If you were in Arizona on October 30, 2011, perhaps you managed to get to the cupcake festival in Scottsdale. This annual cupcake festival is all about cupcakes and features samples, contests and more, and there is another this year if you missed out on the last.
At this cupcake festival, professional bakers can compete in various contests ranging from "best use of a secret ingredient" to "best savory cupcake" and this festival is all about having fun, rather than taking cupcake baking too seriously. The contests include best cupcake frosting, most outrageous cupcake, and who can eat the most cupcakes, so why not have a go?
There is also a cupcake decorating station which the kids should enjoy, cupcake decorating demonstrations, a photo booth, a prize raffle, and a cupcake eating contest.
You can try using a pastry bag and get some tips and advice about how to decorate your own cupcake recipes. You can buy various cupcake-themed articles like charms and T-shirts as well.
The cupcake festival in 2010 saw most of the event profits donated to Safe Haven for Animals, a non-profit, no-kill animal shelter, and Singleton Moms, a charity helping single mothers with cancer. In 2010, over $7000 was donated to these charities from the cupcake festival in Scottsdale.
If you like cupcakes, there is something here for everyone. Perhaps you are new to baking and looking for some handy baking tips, in which case the cupcake festival in Scottsdale is a great place to go, to meet likeminded bakers and home cooks and exchange cupcake tips, tricks and recipes. There is another this year, so why not head over? It is sure to be a lot of fun.
No two cupcake recipes are alike and some people like to make a new cupcake recipe every time they make cupcakes. Other people have favorites and usually make the same kind, but cupcakes come in many flavors, including dark chocolate, creamy vanilla, apple and cinnamon, and many more besides.
If you want your cupcakes to be memorable for the right reasons, then it is important to find the best cupcake recipes, follow the recipes to the letter, and make sure the cupcakes bake for the right amount of time. Finally you should let them cool before you frost them. If you are new to frosting, choose a simple recipe and perhaps spoon it on with a teaspoon before adding a simple garnish.
Piping frosting on to cupcakes might give a better-looking result but you should practice first. Spooned-on frosting looks better than badly-piped frosting, so keep things simple if you are new to cupcake-making. There is plenty of time to practice and improve your techniques, but get the basics down pat first.
One way to ensure your cupcakes are memorable is to focus on the ingredients and presentation. Use the best quality ingredients you can get and make sure your cupcakes looks professional. If you are making cupcakes for the kids and letting them decorate their own then forget the second part, but if you are serving them when friends or family visit, make sure they look good and do not hurry the decoration.
You might like to pick out an unusual cupcake recipe, perhaps something like pumpkin cupcakes or ladybug cupcakes. These are sure to be remembered, especially if they taste as great as they look. Cupcakes are a cute treat and homemade cupcakes are something that every visitor loves.
