Easy and Gourmet Cupcake Recipes for All Home Cooks

Cupcakes are little cakes which are often baked in paper cases. Known as patty cakes in Australia and fairy cakes in the UK, cupcakes can be served plain, frosted, or decorated with sprinkles and other ingredients. Regardless of your baking experience, you are sure to find a cupcake recipe that you love.

History of Cupcakes

These delicious little treats date back to 1796, or at least that is when the first cupcake recipe goes back to. In the early 1800s, both "cupcake" (one word) and "cup cake" (two words) were used. They used to be baked in individual molds, cups or ramekins made of pottery and their name comes from these little containers, or "cups" which contained them.

This name is still used today and the word cupcake refers to any small, single portion-sized cake. A few years ago, cupcakes enjoyed a new wave of fame, largely thanks to various television shows. Also, Martha Stewart published a cupcake cook book last year which further roused interest in this type of baking.

A Closer Look at Cupcake Recipes

You can use almost any layer cake recipe to make cupcakes and the basic ingredients in most cupcake recipes are butter, eggs, flour, and sugar. Cupcakes bake much quicker than layer cakes because they are smaller and therefore conduct heat better.

Although some bakers still like to use individual ramekins for making their cupcake recipes, steel cupcake trays are more popular today. These pans are a bit like muffin tins and some are nonstick. They usually have six or twelve "cups" in which the cupcake batter goes. As well as steel ones, you can also get silicone or stoneware ones. The cups will be three inches in diameter and hold four ounces of batter unless you get a jumbo or miniature specialty pan.

Gourmet Cupcake Recipes

These recipes are relatively recent, when you look at the whole history of cupcakes. These big filled cupcake recipes might contain a cappuccino or tiramisu flavor filling. Gourmet cupcake stores like Crumbs Bake Shop offer various types of cupcakes and you can recreate similar ones yourself at home.

The best cupcake recipe is largely a matter of personal preference. Some people like simple cupcakes with or without a plain vanilla frosting. Others like jumbo filled cupcake recipes with chocolate, caramel, coffee, or fruit fillings and kids tend to like all cupcake recipes.

Let Your Imagination Run Riot

You can get really creative when it comes to gourmet cupcake recipes, choosing the flavor of the cake itself, the flavor and type of frosting and the decorations you want to use. Flavor examples for the cake include vanilla, orange, lemon, banana, coconut, almond, coffee, rose, and chocolate. Flavor examples for the frosting include vanilla, lemon, orange, chocolate, peach, coconut, mixed fruit, berries, marshmallow, chocolate ganache, rose, peppermint and more.

You can combine any flavor of cake with any flavor of frosting when making your own cupcake recipes. You might also want to fill them and decorate them with sprinkles or anything else you can think of. Cupcakes are suitable for all kinds of occasions and some people even like to serve them at their wedding, rather than having a traditional wedding cake. You can get special cupcake holders for these.

Whatever is going on, there is no doubt that homemade cupcakes recipes will make the occasion even better.

Free Recipe for Carrot Cupcakes:

Carrot Cupcakes with Vanilla Buttercream Frosting

Cupcakes might not be the healthiest food in the world but they are very small so that should not be an issue. Besides, life is too short not to enjoy the occasional cupcake! Why not add some extra nutrition to your next cupcake recipe anyway, in the form of carrots? Carrot cake is one of the best-loved cakes ever and carrot cupcakes are equally delicious. The following recipe blends carrots with chocolate, brown sugar, walnuts, buttermilk and more, for a truly mouthwatering gourmet cupcake recipe.

If you do not have a food processor, you will need to use a cheese grater to grate the carrots by hand. This can be time-consuming and watch your knuckles if you are using an old-fashioned kind of grater!

This recipe is very simple and the carrots, brown sugar (use light or dark brown sugar here) and walnuts add a wholesome flavor. You could swap the brown sugar for white sugar if you want to use it. Choose low-fat buttermilk if you want to reduce the fat count a little. These cupcakes have a wonderful flavor and they are light and airy, as all cupcake recipes should be.

Carrot and Chocolate Cupcakes with Walnuts

Ingredients -

1 lb peeled, sliced carrots
6 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 ¾ cups brown sugar
⅓ cup buttermilk
1 oz finely chopped semisweet chocolate
½ teaspoon salt
2 cups all-purpose flour
3 eggs
2 teaspoons baking soda
24 walnut halves

For the Frosting:

3 cups powdered sugar
¾ cup butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Preparation:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Process the carrots in a food processor until they are very finely minced.

Combine them with the eggs, buttermilk, oil, and brown sugar in a bowl.

Spoon the flour into a dry measuring cup and level it off with a knife.

Stir the flour, salt, and baking soda together with a whisk.

Add the flour mixture to the carrot mixture, stirring until smooth. Stir in the chocolate.

Divide the batter between 24 paper case-lined muffin cups.

Bake the chocolate carrot cupcakes for 22 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a cupcake comes out clean.

Let the cupcakes cook in the pan for 10 minutes, then take them out of the pan and let them finish cooling on a wire rack.

Beat the frosting ingredients together until the mixture is smooth.

Pipe the frosting over the cooled cupcakes and decorate each one with a walnut half.

You can see from the picture how decorative the buttercream frosting looks when it is piped on to the cupcakes like this. If you do not have a frosting kit, you can snip the corner off a little plastic bag and use that. Alternatively just spoon the frosting the cake and use a teaspoon or blunt knife to spoon it over. The walnut halves finish these little treats off perfectly and complement the wholesome carrot flavor. The Simplicity of Cupcake Recipes

One reason why cupcakes are so popular is that they are so easy to make. Sometimes kids make them at school as one of their first cookery projects. Making the cupcakes is very straightforward and decorating them is fun. Even if you want to change the flavor of the cupcakes, it is often simply a case of adding one or two other ingredients to the basic cupcake recipe, instead of changing the whole thing.

The same applies to the frosting and you can use food coloring or flavored extracts to change both the look and the flavor of your frosting. You can also experiment with different types of frosting - glossy ones, fluffy ones, healthy ones, cream cheese ones, and more. Cupcakes also come in different sizes. They are usually quite small anyway, designed to serve one person, but you can get mini ones, large ones, and extra-large ones too.

How to Serve Cupcake Recipes

Cupcakes are sure to light anyone's eyes up, so serve them as a special treat after a long day at school or work, with a glass of milk or soda for the kids or a hot drink for the grownups. You can serve them as a snack in the late morning, late afternoon, or evening, to turn any frown upside down guaranteed.

Since cupcakes are so small, they are not going to spoil anyone's appetite for lunch or dinner. Cupcakes are usually served alone but you could serve them with whipped cream or ice cream if you want to make this small snack into a complete dessert.

You could even serve your cupcakes still warm from the oven, with some syrup drizzled over them instead of a frosting. There are many cupcake variations and lots of ways to serve them too. Use your imagination to personalize any cupcake recipe and make it your own.

Why Cupcake Recipes are So Well Loved

Cupcake recipes are suitable for any occasion. Maybe you want to make something cute and tasty to delight the kids, in which case you can make a really easy cupcake recipe and frost it, then maybe add some sprinkles or something to give them a splash of color.
